The Threestones Foundation is expanding its 2026 project support with two approved initiatives and two further proposals under review.
Following the meeting of the Board of Directors and Project Selection Committee on May 12, 2026, the Foundation approved continued support for the Traumatic Brain Injury project of the EANS Foundation in Geneva, as well as a new elderly care initiative with Mekedonia Charity Association in Ethiopia.
Two additional proposals are also in the project pipeline and currently under review.
The first involves a prominent Pension Fund that has requested financial assistance for a selection of its pensioners to facilitate entry into selected retirement homes.
The second focuses on a Geneva-based organisation that brings together associative, institutional, and public actors working on the wellbeing, autonomy, and social inclusion of older people.
Its 2026 priorities include improving access to information for seniors and their families, supporting work on adaptable housing, understanding the needs of older people from migrant backgrounds, and addressing broader issues relating to ageing.
Both projects, along with others in the pipeline, will be assessed during the second half of 2026.
Altogether, the projects reflect the Foundation’s focus on practical support for older people, with work spanning brain health, elderly care, community coordination, and ageing-related services.
“Each project we review is framed by the same question: will this work make a concrete difference to older people’s lives?” says Francesco Sparaco, Chairman of the Threestones Foundation.
“Our role is to support initiatives where targeted funding can help turn commitment, evidence, or local action into meaningful impact.”
Preventative research into brain injury for the elderly (Approved in 2026)
The Threestones Foundation is furthering its commitment to preventative brain-injury innovation for older adults through an additional donation to support the next phase of Beyond the Fall: Mapping Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Risk in the Elderly to Safeguard Brain and Mental Health.
The project has already achieved significant recognition. Its work to date has been accepted for publication in a major, peer-reviewed medical journal and was also awarded the BCV Sustainability Award, underlining both its scientific quality and its potential practical value for older adults throughout the region and beyond.
The Foundation’s additional support will help extend the research from severe hospitalised cases to mild and moderate traumatic brain injuries treated in the HUG Emergency Department, strengthening evidence for prevention, diagnosis, awareness, and follow-up.
“For older adults, a traumatic brain injury can affect far more than physical health,” says project leader Dr. Giannina Rita Iannotti.
Comprehensive elderly care in Ethiopia (Approved in 2026)
The Threestones Foundation is providing support to Mekedonia Charity Association in Ethiopia through its Care for Elderly Beneficiaries initiative.
Mekedonia Charity runs a large senior care centre in Addis Ababa, where food, clothing, housing assistance, and medical care are provided to more than 9,000 destitute elderly and mentally ill people.
The project supported by the Threestones Foundation focuses on 500 selected elderly beneficiaries.
The funding will help provide daily meals, essential sanitary supplies, and care monitoring for elderly residents who are medically vulnerable, bed-ridden, or unable to care for themselves.
“We are fortunate to be able to support such a large charitable organisation in a region of the world where the benefit to the elderly from a single financial donation is disproportionately high,” says Francesco Sparaco, Chairman of the Threestones Foundation.
Building a broader project portfolio
By supporting research in Geneva, practical elderly care in Ethiopia, and reviewing further global initiatives, the Threestones Foundation is strengthening its role as a focused supporter of ageing, care, dignity, and quality of life.
Further updates on projects and ongoing reviews will be shared in the weeks ahead.
